This painting is about seeing the spirit and story of Christ encoded into all of nature. The sunflower is a crucifixion, suspended in silence. The painting is an attempt to give testimony to a moment of bearing witness. Christ as eternal operates outside of time. From within time the Christ story unfolds in substance in infinite repetition and difference; the forms are many in which the unchanging reveals its absolute formlessness. The various modes of substance and stages of the story are all occurring in simultaneity and it is our perception of them that gives them time and narrative sequence. To see the world like this is chaste vision. The painting was a way to acknowledge how the sunflower dies for us in demonstration of the infinite love of Christ; the sunflower is a teacher – one of many. The creation of the seed is the accounting for death.
